Oh no, not again

April 29th, 2005 at 1:10 am (Arts & Culture)

In the grand tradition of me missing things that I’ve been looking forward to for months (eg Napoleon Dynamite, Ghost World, etc), I won’t be able to see the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy tonight. My Dad bought tickets to The Gondoliers, so instead of watching Vogons blow up earth, I’ll be watching a bunch of Italians whining in song about how they’ll have to leave their randomly selected, yet fiercely loyal lady-loves if they want to become king. Why can’t someone write a libretto about having their home blown up? I’m sure Rent could be adapted; you just have to get rid of all that stuff about AIDS.

What’s really getting to me is that this looking-forward-to spans into the years, let alone months. I remember sitting around in high school outside the yearbook office, having lunch and speculating about who would play whom. (At this point, there had been rumours that a movie might be made. Although, we probably would have speculated anyway.) I always thought Bruce Campbell would make the best Zaphod Beeblebrox, but then again, I thought Bruce Campbell would make the best Superman, the best Batman and the best salad dressing. I’m sure this new guy (am i rite? That’s a subtle reference for all those Sam Rockwell fans out there) will do great, though. I’ve liked everything else he’s done. I hear they’ve avoided the papier- mache- second- head- lolling- around- and- looking- stupid curse of the BBC miniseries. I can’t wait to see how that guy from Love, Actually handles Slartibartfast.

OMG! I’m so excited! Who’s Humma Kavula, and how is John Malkovich managing to make it okay to me that he’s been added to the movie? I’ve never seen him act in anything, and yet already I am in love with Mos Def.

Have I mentioned how much I love this video?

They dress like the white stripes, one of their members looks like Angus Young, dead people do ballet and then there’s a bunch of dancing with umbrellas. I swear, the dancing umbrellas thing is actually the bestest part. The umbrellas are black, with red underneath! So stylish. And all this coming from a band called My Chemical Romance. What pomp!

Here’s a great primer. Apparently the lead singer was once stabbed in Kindergarten. Their official website is also a kicker, it’s all about broken hearts and the use of fanciful words. I am officially declaring My Chemical Romance as my favourite rock band of the night. And as long as I’m making wild statements, I’d also like to mention that I think Green Day was the best band to come out of the 90’s.

I’ve been blogging lots of goth stuff these days. I wish I’d been a better goth in high school, I only ever wrote one angsty novel about death and satanism and I never sacrificed anything. Shashi and I dressed up in full goth regalia one day and scared this middle aged woman. It was the highlight of our week.

Side note: Ozzy has done a Beatles cover?

The Internet sucks

April 27th, 2005 at 4:23 am (Linkage)

Les is complaining that the internet sucks, so I am linking to things to prove that it does not.

  • By coincidence, the very first piece I stumbled upon at the following site was a piece called “Golden Words.” The Ray Caesar Gallery starts out beautiful and creepy, and gets creepier and creepier the more and more it sexualizes young-ish girls. They don’t seem to have a specific age, but they all look like a teenaged Christina Ricci, so I guess it’s still possible to pretend they’re over 18 and it’s not CGI child porn. Are there laws against that?

  • This link to art by Daren Rabinovitch is equally creepy and neat.
  • En el interior del cuerpo humano has a whole bunch of really cool images of human body cells.
  • Fuji Ya has some great ads for its sushi, and this little graphic teaches you how to work your chopsticks.
  • Out of the Red showcases art from China.
  • Adolf Hitler showcases his home in Homes and Gardens.
  • Crazy mean baby is a site dedicated to a crazy mean baby.
  • The History of the Corset is mostly pictures of corsets and refined women wearing corsets. It’s all very prim.
  • For those demanding something a little bit more racy, this Retro Porno is a little less prim.
  • I’m always iffy about Craftster, because it tends to be full of hipsters and I (of course) hate hipsters, but this is pretty neat: someone made a giant pink boar rug.

All of these links are shamelessly stolen from Geisha asobi.
