One ray of hope: all the disciplines are averaged together... I'm pretty sure the average science professor makes more than the average arts professor. On the other hand, if they've averaged EVERYTHING, business and engineering profs are inflating the average and we're doomed to middle class existence for eternity despite higher education and (eventual) tenure. For example, Michigan State made $ 40Mil last season from football. I don't know how much money each prof generates through grants etc, but it's hard to argue against a program that brings in that much money. Furthermore, having a high profile football coach is akin to hiring Steven Hawking as a professor, so there is a prestige factor as well. Data found here http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/.
