First of all…

PHD Comics: Academic Salaries

Do you know how effing depressing this is for a wannabe academic? TENURED PROFS? Making an average of $86,000 per year? Looks like I’m taking up football.

Second of all…

Hmm… A Facebook for academics. Kind of like… the old facebook?

It is pretty ludicrous that coaches make more than professors but football is big business in the States. For example, Michigan State made $ 40Mil last season from football. I don’t know how much money each prof generates through grants etc, but it’s hard to argue against a program that brings in that much money. Furthermore, having a high profile football coach is akin to hiring Steven Hawking as a professor, so there is a prestige factor as well.

It’s still depressing. I’m fairly sure that professors do more important work that football coaches. I am willing to withdraw my comment if a football coach discovers that pigskin is a cure for AIDS, cancer or bird flu.

Zergh. Depressing indeed. That nifty $9,000 gender gap’s pretty snazzy, too. *seethe*

That’s not a gender gap! More of a money fjord.

I’m so late to this party, but I also found that PhD comic extremely depressing. One ray of hope: all the disciplines are averaged together… I’m pretty sure the average science professor makes more than the average arts professor. On the other hand, if they’ve averaged EVERYTHING, business and engineering profs are inflating the average and we’re doomed to middle class existence for eternity despite higher education and (eventual) tenure.

Re: The gender fissure – more female profs are young. Young profs make less. I know there’s a gap, but I doubt it’s this bad.
