Last year around this time I spent like 50% of my time on eBay trying to buy various things. Mostly Christmas presents. I was all boy crazy (omg Les) and I was on a big Phoenix kick so I would listen to it constantly. Now that I’m listening to their “Alphabetical” album again, for some reason I feel this intense urge to hug a boy and then buy books in Esperanto on the internet.

Umo means thingummyjig in Esperanto, which means that Umoj means thingummyjigs. Umoja is Swahili for unity, which is sort of like a big giant pile of thingummyjigs. In this way, Swahili is cool.
Secondly, weird spelling of thingummyjig, no? But that’s the way my dictionary spells it.

This makes me think of the way gender is expressed in Esperanto. In order to feminize something, you take the base word and add “in” to it. So Viro becomes Virino. I know it’s just to make things easier, but sometimes it gets under my skin that the default word is male.

You know how some songs make you so happy that they bring tears to your eyes? Queen does that to me. I haven’t listened to them in a long time, but I saw Shaun of the Dead yesterday and it brought it all back.
