All my kiddie shoes have been given away already, but if you still have yours, please read this.
Dear Friends:
A number of you have e-mailed me asking what I need here in Kabul. I thank you for your concern, but I actually want, or need, for very little. The weather here is a bit colder than I had expected, we still have snow here.
Kabul itself is about the size of Ottawa, and exhibits the scars of thirty years of warfare. Poverty is everywhere, and orphanages — one of the by-products of a war — are filled to capacity, and many of the kids in these institutions don’t have a pair of shoes.
If you have kids, or know someone who does, can you send me some used kids footwear — any size will do, from tots to teens. And while we’re at it, socks too!
You can forward these to me and I’ll make sure that they end up in the right hands — or should I say, on they right feet. I can be reached at the address below:
Sgt Topolinsky, D.J.
Engr Sqn
OP ATHENA, Camp Julien
PO Box 5006 Stn Forces
BELLEVILLE, ON K8N 5W6
Cheers, and thanks.
From Ryan: “If you mail the shoes to that address, they will be shipped to his camp in Afghanistan. And I’m planning to check out secondhand stores. Places like the March of Dimes, Value Village, Salvation Army, etc. I plan to tell them it’s for Afghani orphans, so maybe they’ll give me a better price.”

ber Kommandoh by Magma looks like a great album. Just look at that cover art! So basic, and yet so intense. It’s like the liner notes are seeing directly into my SOUL.
Can is set to release all 14 of their albums on SACD by 2006! I think I might have known that already and am rediscovering it in the manner of a goldfish, but I sure didn’t know this: Can’s founder, Irmin Schmidt, wrote an opera of Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast in 1998. I LOVE progressive rockers. LOVE THEM. They never do anything normal. The website even has audio clips from the opera. But if you download them, don’t you dare enjoy them. They are my indie cred band, and I can’t have my indie cred destroyed by a bunch of people liking the same music I do.
I also goldfished Spock’s Beard today! I recognized the name, but just thought they were another crappy indie band trying to take advantage of a crude pop culture reference to win fame, but it turns out that they’re AWESOME! I say that without having heard them, of course, but that’s because I can’t find any of their albums online. Whether or not they’re good (which they ARE), they play the THEREMIN and the SAW. And those are two of the greatest instruments known to man.

I just passed my driver’s exam. Well, my G1 exit test at least. One more test to go! Gosh, it’s almost as much hassle as getting a test done by the board of education.
Educate’d!
